THE HEDGEHOG EXIT : On the Only Known Way Out of the Khaldun Cycle, the Precondition That Locks It, and Why the Two Papers Are One Argument

Ibn Khaldun (1377) describes a cycle: solidarity forged in hardship produces service; service produces prosperity; prosperity consumes the solidarity; the group stops serving; it is displaced. The cycle has one documented exit. Jim Collins (2001) describes it as the HedgehogConcept — the discipline of answering honestly what a group can be the best in the world at, as distinct from what it is merely good at. The exit is real and has been used. IBM, displaced from the center of computing in the early 1990s, performed the exercise and stabilized at a lower level by discovering a circle it could genuinely claim: enterprise services. That is the case that shows the exit works. The exit is also locked. The Hedgehog exercise requires an honest assessment of what thediscipline requires. That assessment requires holding the discipline's basis vector. The AI industry, by THE MISSING BASIS VECTOR's argument, does not hold it — not from lack of skill, but because the discipline stopped teaching it. So the cycle has an exit, the exit is documented, and the exit is unavailable to a group that cannot see the boundary of its own circle. That is the finding. Not that displacement is inevitable. That displacement is inevitable for a group that cannot perform the exercise — and the exercise cannot be performed by a group that never learned what its discipline is about.
