“Pay or Be a Jailbird”: Female-Driven Post-Coital Extortion in Rural Limpopo, South Africa

Post-coital financial extortion, colloquially known as “pay or be a jailbird”, is an under-researched form of sexual–economic exploitation in rural South Africa. This phenomenological qualitative study explored the lived experiences of ten men in Tafelkop, Limpopo Province, who had experienced financial demands following consensual sexual encounters, typically under threat of false rape allegations or public exposure. Participants were recruited through snowball sampling and interviewed using semi-structured guides in Sepedi and English. Data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s six-phase thematic analysis, guided by the Social–Ecological Model (SEM) and Feminist Theory. Four interlinked themes emerged: (1) substance use as a facilitator of impaired consent and subsequent manipulation; (2) threats of legal and social sanction as primary coercive mechanisms; (3) mutual economic precarity that normalizes extortion as a survival strategy; and (4) profound psychological distress and legal disenfranchisement that perpetuate victim silence. The findings reveal that vulnerability to coercion is not gender-exclusive but is structurally produced at individual, interpersonal, community, and societal levels. This study contributes a gendered ecological model of coercion and underscores the urgent need for gender-inclusive legal reforms, community-based psychosocial interventions, and socio-economic empowerment programs that address both male victimization and women’s structural marginalization in rural South African contexts.
