Exploring Alternate Career Pathways beyond Competitive Exams with Skill Education
Increasing competition in entrance examinations such as NEET, JEE, CLAT, and CAT highlights the need for diverse career pathways beyond conventional academics. Skill education develops practical knowledge, vocational competencies, employability, entrepreneurship, and life skills. This study examines parents’ perceptions of skill education as a meaningful pathway for students unable or unwilling to pursue competitive examinations. A quantitative survey using a structured Google Forms questionnaire employed descriptive, inferential, and graphical analyses. Interactions with students, parents, and teachers, alongside real-life case studies, provided additional insights. Findings establish skill education as essential for future-ready schooling, fostering employability, innovation, critical thinking, entrepreneurship, and adaptability. Despite reforms under NEP 2020, NCF-SE 2023, and CBSE Skill Education, misconceptions hinder its acceptance. Improved programme accessibility, industry partnerships, teacher training, and stakeholder awareness are necessary. Skill education should complement rather than replace academic learning, offering equally valuable career opportunities. Integrating academic excellence with vocational competencies promotes sustainable economic growth, self-reliance, lifelong learning, and workforce readiness. This transformation supports the vision of VIKSIT BHARAT 2047 by developing skilled, innovative citizens capable of contributing to national progress and adapting to evolving global workforce demands.
