Web-based dashboard for integrating bio-hub and biomass supply chain case studies: a global SWOT-based review

Biomass supply chains and bio-hubs play a key role in facilitating the mobilisation, pre-processing, and valorisation of biomass from agricultural and forestry systems into higher-value bio-based products. To improve accessibility and comparability of international case studies, a web-based dashboard was developed to integrate Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) from multiple bio-hub and biomass supply chain studies. The platform consolidates case studies from Europe, North and South America, Asia, and Australia, enabling spatial visualisation and comparative analysis of sustainability and operational characteristics. The dashboard was developed using ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Pro, combining geospatial data with structured SWOT datasets derived from published IEA Bioenergy Task 43 activities and associated international case studies. A total of 27 case studies across two project phases were integrated into the system, including both bio-hub-specific and broader biomass supply chain systems. The results demonstrate that while biomass availability and infrastructure represent key strengths across regions, major constraints include financial risks, organisational complexity, and policy uncertainty. Opportunities are largely associated with value addition, market expansion, and the development of a circu-lar bioeconomy, whereas threats are linked to environmental sustainability risks, market instability, and governance challenges. The dashboard provides a single-access platform for researchers, planners, and industry stakeholders to compare biomass systems globally and supports evidence-based decision-making for sustainable bioeconomy development.
