Who Won Here? Every UK General Election since 1832 on One Map

I put every United Kingdom general election from 1832 to 2024 on a single, consistent map: 49 elections, 28,346 constituency contests, 89,545 candidacies and 31,736 seats filled. Candidate results come from the UK Parliament and House of Commons Library datasets (1832 to 2019, and 2024 with notional 2019 results on the new boundaries). The number of members each constituency returned, which the results file does not give, comes from Wikidata's record of every member elected at each general election; the resulting seat totals match the size of the House at every election, and the elected candidates' surnames agree with Wikidata's members for 98.7% of seats. Party labels are grouped into fifteen families, and each constituency is placed at a point rather than within boundaries. The data show how unusual the early reformed elections were: from 1832 to 1880, 40.1% of seats were filled without a contest, and in 1859 the figure was 58.1%. The Liberal family fell from 397 seats in 1906 to 6 in 1951, while Labour, which first won seats in 1900, passed the Liberals in 1922. Wales and Scotland moved from Liberal to Labour, and Scotland to the SNP, which won 56 of 59 Scottish seats in 2015. Of 45 seats in the North, the Midlands and Wales that Labour won in 2017 and lost to the Conservatives in 2019, the new seats covering the same regions largely returned to Labour in 2024. Abstract

The map, data and code are open. Interactive version: https://maps.tristanhotham.com/elections-since-1832/. Data and code: https://github.com/Tristan-Hotham/elections-since-1832.
