DYNAMICS OF EMOTIONAL REGULATION AND SOCIAL SUPPORT OF INMATES IN NARCOTICS CASES IN LUBUK PAKAM CLASS IIB CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION
This qualitative study examines emotion regulation and social support among narcotics-case inmates at Class IIB Lubuk Pakam Correctional Institution. Data were obtained through interviews, participatory observation, and documentation involving five inmates in the initial orientation phase and two correctional officers. Analysis used Miles and Huberman's interactive model, supported by NVivo coding and source and technique triangulation. Findings show that inmates use five emotion-regulation strategies: situation selection, situation modification, attentional deployment, cognitive change, and response modulation. Attentional deployment through exercise, worship, work, and correctional activities was most prominent. Family and peers mainly provided emotional support, while officers provided informational and instrumental support. Regulation and support were constrained by initial psychological shock, stigma, limited social networks, staff constraints, overcrowding, and the dominance of narcotics cases.
