Least Loss of Passive Phase Shifters
LaTeX source, numerical checks (161) and a Lean 4 certificate (70 theorems) of the finite and algebraic parts of the paper The Energy Cost of a Phase Shift. The paper proves that a passive causal system without zeros in the upper half-plane cannot shift every frequency of a band [a,b] by the same phase theta > 0 without loss: its mean attenuation over the band is at least theta (K(kappa) - E(kappa))/kappa nepers, kappa = (b-a)/(b+a), and an explicit system attains this. With zeros allowed, one explicit system with a single zero has the least attenuation at every frequency of the band at once; for a right angle its mean attenuation is (pi/2)(sqrt b - sqrt a)/(sqrt b + sqrt a) nepers.
