A Virtual Reality-Based Educational Scenario for Teaching the Surgical Safety Checklist: Development and Expert Evaluation Study

Background/Objectives: Surgical procedures carry significant, preventable risks, rendering effective team training in safety protocols essential. Although the World Health Organization Surgical Safety Checklist reduces perioperative failures, traditional instruction often lacks immersive, experiential practice. To address this gap, this study aimed to develop and evaluate a virtual reality scenario for teaching the Surgical Safety Checklist. Methods: This is a technological development study conducted in 2025, comprising software development and expert-based evaluation of its pedagogical, user experience, and interface dimensions by seven nursing experts. Selected SQUIRE-EDU elements were used only as a complementary reference. Results: The virtual environment presents an immersive and interactive scenario covering the three phases of the surgical experience. Regarding evaluation, the experts evaluated the technology positively, with an average score of 76.7 out of a maximum of 80 points (95.9% of the maximum total score; version evaluated before the experts’ suggestions were implemented), classifying the software as “Very good” in terms of pedagogical dimensions, user experience, and interface. They also highlighted the ease of navigation, clarity of information, and potential to stimulate learning. Conclusions: The virtual reality scenario was developed and received favorable evaluations from experts regarding pedagogical aspects, user experience, and interface. The findings provide initial evidence of the scenario’s suitability for teaching the Surgical Safety Checklist. Research with nursing students and healthcare professionals is needed to assess usability, acceptability, and effects on learning outcomes.

Although the World Health Organization Surgical Safety Checklist reduces perioperative failures, traditional instruction often lacks immersive, experiential practice.
