An AI-Powered Skin Health Analyzer Mobile Application for Preliminary Skin Monitoring: Design, Implementation and Validation at a Kampala Dermatology Clinic

Skin issues such as acne, dryness, redness and pigmentation are prevalent within urban areas of Kampala. However, dermatology specialist clinics have restrictions such as increased costs, longer waiting times and many return visits. This paper discusses the design, implementation and validation of an AI powered Skin Health Analyzer android application, which enables users to take a photo of their skin, analyse it using AI to detect common visible skin issues and classify them into levels of severity, receive personalized skincare and lifestyle recommendations and monitor their progress. The application was designed using Kampala Dermatology, a private dermatology specialist clinic located within Bugolobi, Kampala. The requirements were gathered using a structured interview with 40 participants including 5 dermatology professionals, 10 clinic staff, 5 skincare professionals and 20 patients. A questionnaire was also completed with 90% of the 50 users (45). Observation and document analysis were also conducted.
