What possession is worth: evidence from two world cups

At the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the team with more of the ball won 23 of 49 decided matches; at the 2026 World Cup, it won 61 of 80. This study asks why. FIFA post-match statistics for all 168 matches were combined with pre-tournament Elo ratings and modeled with one observation per match. Possession tracked team strength almost equally in both tournaments (r = 0.61 and 0.62) and, once strength was known, added no information about goal difference (2022: b = −0.024, p = 0.42; 2026: b = +0.004, p = 0.79). On the win-draw-loss scale, strength-adjusted possession was negatively associated with results in 2022 (ordinal b = −0.087, p = 0.002) but not in 2026, consistent with the 2022 upsets, in which successful underdogs had substantially less possession and more transition play than unsuccessful underdogs. Ablation and double machine learning located possession’s information: in 2026 matches with a clear favorite, adding possession to strength and directness increased explained variance by 0.54 for completed line breaks, 0.14 for expected goals (xG), and only 0.013 for goal difference. Cross-fitted estimates indicated approximately 15 additional line breaks and +0.15 xG, but no statistically distinguishable change in goal difference, per ten percentage points of possession. Defensive denial accounted for approximately 43% of the positive xG volume component, while lower goal production per unit of possession offset the associated scoring opportunities. These findings distinguish possession’s role as an enabling resource from its productivity and incremental predictive significance: a resource can be fundamental to attacking production without explaining additional variation in realized goals. This distinction motivates Sublime Football - a proposed extension of Total Football - consisting of possession-oriented tactical philosophy in which possession is evaluated by its conversion into attacking production, defensive denial, and scoring advantage rather than by its quantity alone. The framework remains a hypothesis for future empirical testing.
