The Effect of Digital Payment Adoption on the Financial Performance of Micro and Small Enterprises

The rapid adoption of digital payment technologies has transformed the way micro and small enterprises conduct business transactions and manage their financial activities. This study examines the effect of digital payment adoption on the financial performance of micro and small enterprises. The study is based on a review of empirical studies examining digital payments, financial technology adoption, financial literacy, financial inclusion, and the financial performance of micro and small enterprises across different contexts. The reviewed literature indicates that digital payment adoption generally contributes positively to enterprise financial performance by improving transaction efficiency, reducing cash-handling and calculation errors, facilitating faster payments and collections, and supporting more effective financial management. Digital payment systems also provide greater transaction transparency and accessibility to financial services, which may improve business opportunities and access to formal financing. However, the magnitude of the effect varies across studies and contexts. Several studies suggest that the benefits of digital payment adoption are influenced by complementary factors, including digital and financial literacy, technological infrastructure, consumer trust, perceived security, financial inclusion, and the readiness of business owners to adopt digital technologies. The findings indicate that digital payment adoption should not be viewed solely as a technological change but as part of a broader digital financial transformation process. Strengthening digital literacy, financial management capabilities, and supporting infrastructure is therefore important to maximize the contribution of digital payment adoption to the financial performance and sustainability of micro and small enterprises
