Foreign Language Teaching Anxiety of Efl Pre-Service Teachers During Teaching Practicum

Previous research on foreign language teaching has shown that teaching anxiety in pre-service teachers is considered a crucial issue. Thus, this study aims to understand the overall foreign language teaching anxiety levels and pinpoint the most dominant contributing factors among EFL pre-service teachers at a state university in Malang, Indonesia. The data were quantitatively analyzed using a descriptive cross-sectional survey design. The participants were 50 ELT students from a state university in Malang who had completed their teaching practicum program. The findings showed that Malang EFL pre-service teachers' teaching anxiety is moderate. Hence, the underlying factor is the lack of students’ interest. This was followed by a lack of teaching experience, lack of time management, fear of getting a bad evaluation, and their self-perception of English proficiency. The study suggests that educators should not only focus on preparing the language proficiency of pre-service teachers but also strengthen their pedagogical skills as a foundation of their teaching practice.
