Reducing Checkout Friction: A Product Management Framework for Identity, Payments, and Conversion

This white paper explores checkout friction in digital commerce and introduces the Checkout Friction Decision Framework (CFDF), a structured product management approach that helps teams identify, prioritize, and reduce friction in the purchase process. The framework encompasses the following list of intertwined checkout characteristics to improve: customer identity and recognition, authentication, payment, confidence, accessibility, and recovery from errors. It builds on existing checkout usability principles, freely available authentication and accessibility recommendations, and pragmatic product management techniques to support customer-oriented decisions. A conceptual prioritization framework, proposed interventions, analytics needs, methods to experiment, and measurement guardrails are required to understand the impact of checkout improvements. The focus is to balance optimization of conversions with customer experience, operational feasibility and security, and long-term platform scalability. This document, intended for product managers, e-commerce teams, UX practitioners, and digital commerce teams, offers a pragmatic approach to identifying and prioritizing checkout frustrations and translating the findings into evidence-based product strategies. The framework presented here is conceptual and has not been tested empirically. It does not contain any proprietary information or confidential organizational data. Abstract
