Comparative Evaluation of Antioxidant Capacity and Enzyme Inhibition Potential of Spathulariopsis velutipes Extracts Supported by Phytochemical Characterization

ABSTRACT Given the limited knowledge on Spathulariopsis velutipes , this study compared ethyl acetate, methanol, and water extracts through phytochemical profiling and in vitro antioxidant and enzyme‐inhibition assays. LC–ESI–MS/MS revealed marked solvent‐dependent differences, with the water extract richest in phenolics. Methanol showed the highest overall antioxidant capacity (RACI: 0.41), whereas ethyl acetate and methanol exhibited strong α‐glucosidase inhibition, with lower IC 50 values than acarbose (1.64 mg/mL) under the same in vitro assay conditions; however, because the extracts were crude preparations, this numerical comparison should not be interpreted as evidence of greater pharmacological or therapeutic efficacy. Exploratory correlation analysis suggested descriptive covariation between selected phytochemical parameters and bioactivity measures; however, because only three extracts were available for comparison, these associations should be regarded as preliminary patterns rather than statistically supported relationships. Overall, the organic extracts exhibit preliminary in vitro antioxidant and enzyme‐inhibitory activities that warrant further investigation. Because the present findings are based exclusively on crude‐extract in vitro assays, their physiological or therapeutic relevance cannot be inferred without isolation of the active constituents, mechanistic characterization, and validation in appropriate cellular and in vivo models.
