Nurse-Driven Foley Removal Using The HOUDINI Method
This evidence-based practice project focuses on improving nurse adherence to an existing nurse-driven Foley catheter removal policy using the HOUDINI method. Through staff education, a quick-reference guide, routine catheter-necessity assessments, and ongoing feedback, the project aims to increase nurses’ knowledge and confidence in applying the approved criteria while promoting appropriate catheter use and reducing the risk of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). Evaluation of policy adherence and patient safety outcomes, including catheter days, urinary retention, and catheter reinsertion, will help determine the effectiveness of the implementation strategies and identify opportunities for continued improvement.
