Implementing Evidence-Based Use of Disinfecting Port Protectors to Prevent Infection on All Intravenous Lines

The use of intravenous therapy in a hospital setting is a crucial part of the healthcare system. Catheter-related bloodstream infections can occur when hospital staff do not take the proper steps to disinfect the connective hubs before using them. Antimicrobial port protectors are single-use disinfecting caps that easily screw onto the connecting ports of not only intravenous tubing, but also the lumens of central venous catheters. Encouraging hospitals to implement evidence-based protocols based on research that supports a decrease in bloodstream infections with the use of antibacterial caps on intravenous lines could increase patient safety and promote better patient outcomes.
