From Local Optimality to Global Compatibility: A Research Program Toward an Explanatory Proof of the Kepler Theorem

This research-program note explores a geometric route toward a more explanatory proof of the Kepler theorem: local packing advantages must be assessed together with the constraints of global compatibility. For packings of unit balls in three-dimensional Euclidean space, the note formulates the target density bound, π/√18, in terms of a reference mean Voronoi-cell volume of 4√2. It proposes a compensation inequality under which the aggregate negative volume excess over an expanding region is bounded by a boundary-order term rather than a volume-order term. Under explicitly stated assumptions, including uniformly bounded Voronoi-cell diameters, the note derives the Kepler density bound conditionally from this proposed inequality. It also outlines a candidate mechanism using antisymmetric transfers between neighboring cells: internal contributions cancel, leaving boundary contributions to be controlled. The central compensation lemma remains unproved. No explicit transfer construction, complete extension to arbitrary packings, or claim of methodological novelty is established. Local-density inequalities and correction methods are acknowledged as existing approaches, with references to Hales (2005), Lagarias (2002), and Hales et al. (2017). This work is a conceptual research proposal, not a new proof of the Kepler theorem. Its purpose is to identify precise proof obligations and investigate whether a unifying geometric principle can provide greater explanatory clarity. Abstract
