THE arXiv CONUNDRUM

The preprint repository arXiv was founded in 1991 to dismantle the gatekeeping, commercial rent-seeking, and temporal stagnation inherent in legacy peer-reviewed academic publishing. Funded generously by the late James Simons and the Simons Foundation to establish an unencumbered, public channel of scientific priority, the platform was conceived as an architectural “hack” against bureaucratic inertia. Over the past decade, however, arXiv has undergone institutional ossification, reconstructing the very medieval gatehouse it was chartered to overthrow. This treatise analyzes the structural pathology of modern preprint moderation through an epistemological and sociotechnical lens. We document a profound procedural absurdity:the demand by arXiv moderation panels that independent researchers must “first publish in a peer-reviewed legacy journal and provide proof of publication” before being permitted to deposit a preprint. We expose the inherent circularity of converting an unrefereed preprint exchange into a lagging post-publication repository. Furthermore, we examine the systemic hubris of anonymous moderation tiers overruling established pioneers of theoretical physics—including the documented reprimand of Alexander (Sasha) Migdal for endorsing foundational hydrodynamic research. Grounded in Robert K. Merton’s sociology of science, Thomas Kuhn’s paradigm dynamics, and the economics of open-access networks, we demonstrate how algorithmic and opaque editorial screening enforces intellectual monoculture, suppresses radical first-principles inquiry, and betrays the egalitarian vision of Jim Simons and Paul Ginsparg.
