Rice Production, Land Utilization and Agricultural Intensification in Kono District Compared with the Eastern Region of Sierra Leone: Evidence from the 2024 Annual Agricultural Survey

Rice is central to food consumption and smallholder livelihoods in Sierra Leone, making evidence on participation, cultivation timing and production systems important for agricultural planning. This study compares rice-farming participation, cultivation cycles, rice-variety patterns and growing periods in Kono District and the Eastern Region using published results from the 2024 Sierra Leone Annual Agricultural Survey (SLAAS). A descriptive comparative design was applied to published survey tables, with percentages and figures used to clarify patterns. The survey reports 84,164 agricultural holdings cultivating rice in Kono, compared with 233,993 in the Eastern Region.
