Bill Viola and the Construction of a Visual and Spiritual Worldview: An Interpretive Model Based on Philosophical, Religious, Artistic, and Videographic Traditions

This article analyzes Bill Viola’s visual and spiritual thought through an interpretive model that relates philosophical, religious, artistic, and videographic traditions to the categories we have established through a vast body of academic literature and the analysis of his works. The study aims to demonstrate, on the one hand, the correspondences between these three levels of analysis and, on the other, whether Viola—as he himself points out—reworks these influences to construct a visual and spiritual language of his own that is open, non-dogmatic, universal, and centered on the present.

Abstract

This article analyzes Bill Viola’s visual and spiritual thought through an interpretive model that relates philosophical, religious, artistic, and videographic traditions to the categories we have established through a vast body of academic literature and the analysis of his works. The study aims to demonstrate, on the one hand, the correspondences between these three levels of analysis and, on the other, whether Viola—as he himself points out—reworks these influences to construct a visual and spiritual language of his own that is open, non-dogmatic, universal, and centered on the present.
