IoT-Based Municipal Waste Management Platform
Municipal solid waste management remains a significant challenge for urban local bodies due to variations in waste accumulation and the limitations of fixed collection schedules. These challenges can result in overflowing waste bins, unnecessary collection trips, and limited visibility of waste conditions. To address these issues, this paper proposes an IoT-Based Municipal Waste Management Platform that integrates real-time bin monitoring with cloud-based data management and collection coordination. The proposed system uses an HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor and an ESP32 microcontroller to estimate waste-bin fill levels and transmit sensor readings to Firebase Realtime Database through Wi-Fi. When the estimated fill level reaches a predefined threshold, the platform generates an alert to notify municipal personnel about bins requiring collection. Location information associates each bin with its collection point, while a municipal dashboard provides centralized monitoring of bin status. A collector-facing mobile interface is proposed to support task acknowledgement and collection-status updates. The framework also defines the system architecture, operational workflow, threshold-based decision logic, and an evaluation methodology covering fill-level estimation, alert latency, data transmission reliability, and collection coordination. Since the platform is presented as a proposed framework, its operational effectiveness and potential benefits require validation through prototype implementation and experimental comparison with existing collection practices. The proposed approach aims to provide a practical foundation for improving waste-monitoring visibility, collection coordination, and responsiveness in municipal waste management.
