An examination of psychological well-being and insomnia among older adults in Bangladesh: A moderated mediation of age, perceived stress, and perceived social support

This study examined the relationship between insomnia and psychological well-being and the moderated-mediation effects of stress, social support, and age among older adults in Bangladesh. A cross-sectional survey using purposive sampling was conducted with 681 participants aged 60-79 years, employing four culturally adapted Bangla scales. Well-being was significantly correlated with social support, stress, and insomnia. Multiple regression indicated that social support, perceived stress, and insomnia jointly explained 46.4% of the variance in well-being. Mediation analysis showed that stress and social support significantly mediated the relationship between insomnia and well-being. Moderated mediation revealed that insomnia had a stronger indirect effect on well-being through social support among the young-old compared to the old-old. These findings highlight the importance of reducing stress and insomnia and of enhancing social support to promote healthy aging and psychological well-being among older adults in Bangladesh.
