Technology-Driven Professional Development for School Leaders: A Pathway towards Social Transformation

Abstract The rapid advancement of digital technologies has transformed the social, economic and educational landscape and has created new expectations from school leaders. School principals are no longer required only to perform administrative functions; they are increasingly expected to lead digital transformation, support teachers' professional learning, use data for decision-making, promote innovation and create inclusive learning environments. In this context, technology-driven professional development can provide school leaders with flexible, continuous and context-sensitive opportunities for developing leadership competencies. The present conceptual paper explores the role of technology-driven professional development in strengthening the leadership capacities of school leaders and examines how enhanced leadership can contribute to wider social transformation. The paper is based on a review of policy documents, international reports and relevant literature concerning educational technology, professional development and school leadership. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 specifically recognizes the importance of continuous professional development for school principals and recommends modular leadership and management workshops, online development opportunities and professional learning platforms. UNESCO has similarly highlighted the potential of digital technologies to expand professional learning while emphasizing equity, sustainability, human interaction and evidence-based use of technology. The paper proposes a conceptual pathway in which technology-enabled professional development leads to improved digital competence, reflective practice, collaborative leadership, evidence-informed decision-making and innovation among school leaders. These changes can influence teachers, students, school culture and community engagement, thereby contributing to broader social transformation. The paper proposes an integrated framework for designing technology-driven professional development programmes for school leaders and identifies implications for educational institutions, policymakers and researchers.
