Knowledge mapping of circular economy research in Asia: A bibliometric and systematic review from an information science perspective

Purpose: Although the circular economy (CE) has emerged as a key strategy for sustainable development, research examining its business and economic dimensions in Asian economies remains fragmented. This study aims to synthesize existing evidence on circular business models, policy frameworks, and the economic impacts of CE adoption in Asia.Methodology: The study adopts a mixed-review approach by integrating bibliometric analysis with a systematic literature review (SLR). Publications published between 2010 and 2025 were retrieved from OpenAlex and complementary databases.Findings: The findings reveal a substantial increase in CE research since 2020, reflecting growing academic and policy interest across Asia. Product-as-a-service (PaaS), sharing platforms, and remanufacturing emerge as the dominant circular business models, supported by policy initiatives in China, Japan, South Korea, India, and ASEAN economies. CE adoption contributes to productivity improvement, innovation, employment generation, and sustainable economic growth; however, these benefits vary across countries because of differences in institutional capacity and policy environments. Research Limitations: The study is limited to English-language publications indexed primarily in OpenAlex and related databases. Future research should incorporate regional databases, sector-specific case studies, and econometric analyses to strengthen empirical evidence on CE adoption in Asia. Originality: By combining bibliometric mapping with systematic evidence synthesis, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of CE as a strategic business transformation model and offers practical insights for managers, policymakers, and researchers seeking to enhance sustainable competitiveness and economic resilience in Asian economies. Circular economy, Asian business, Sustainability, Bibliometric analysis.
