The Effect of Porang Rice Consumption on Post-Prandial Blood Glucose Levels in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Melitus in The Teja Pamekasan Health Center Work Area
The prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) in Indonesia reached 11.7% in 2023 and is estimated to continue to increase. The majority of the Indonesians population consumes white rice as a staple food that is difficult to replace, event though white rice has a high GI that can increase blood glucose levels. Currently, there is a local rice variety that can reduce post-prandial blood glucose levels, is called porang rice. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of porang rice consumption on changes in postprandial blood glucose levels in patients with T2DM in the Teja Pamekasan Health Center work area. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group. The respondents in this study were 36 who met the inclusion criteria and were selected using voluntary sampling. The respondents were required to consume 100 grams of the test food, consisting of porang rice and white rice. Blood glucose data were collected through measurements of fasting blood glucose and 2-hour postprandial blood glucose. The data were then analyzed using an independent t-test. The results showed that porang rice consumption had an effect on postprandial blood glucose levels with a p-value = 0.002. It can be concluded that porang rice can serve as an alternative staple food to white rice for lowering postprandial blood glucose levels in patients with T2DM.
