An Economic Analysis of Green-gram in Sehore District of Madhya Pradesh, India

Aims: The present study analysed the production economics and marketing of Green-gram (Vigna radiata L.). Study Design: A multi-stage sampling technique was adopted. Place and Duration of Study: Bherunda block of Sehore district, Madhya Pradesh, during 2024–25. Methodology: Primary data were collected from 90 farmers, comprising 30 each of small, medium and large farmers, using a structured interview schedule. The data were analysed using standard cost concepts and marketing efficiency measures. Results: The average Cost C3 was ₹42,707.69 per hectare, while the average yield and gross income were 7.77 qtl/ha and ₹71,308.90/ha, respectively. The net return under Cost C3 was ₹28,601.21 per hectare, with a benefit–cost ratio of 1:1.67. Three marketing channels were identified, with the producer’s share in the consumer price ranging from 88.28 to 93.53 per cent and marketing efficiency from 7.53 to 14.45. Major constraints faced by farmers included pest and disease attacks, delayed availability of quality seed, high transportation charges and inadequate market information. Conclusion: The study concluded that Green-gram cultivation was economically viable in the study area, with considerable scope for improving production and marketing efficiency through the timely availability of quality inputs, better market information and improved marketing infrastructure.
