Relationship Between Body Mass Index and Uric Acid Levels Among Older Adults in Kersamanah Village
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple anthropometric measure used to describe body weight status. Changes in nutritional status and body composition may be associated with uric acid levels; however, studies in Indonesia have reported inconsistent findings. This study aimed to determine the relationship between BMI and uric acid levels among older adults in Kersamanah Village. An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted among 30 older adults selected by consecutive sampling during June–July 2026. BMI was calculated from measured body weight and height, while uric acid levels were assessed using the iTrust GUC-B01KIT point-of-care testing device in accordance with the examination procedure. The relationship between BMI and uric acid levels was analyzed using Spearman correlation at a 5% significance level. The mean age of participants was 64.50 ± 3.64 years, the mean BMI was 19.85 ± 3.16 kg/m², and the mean uric acid level was 5.49 ± 2.37 mg/dL. Spearman analysis showed a weak negative correlation (rs = -0.285; p = 0.127). Thus, no statistically significant relationship between BMI and uric acid levels was identified among the 30 older adults studied. Further research with larger samples and consideration of additional factors is required to provide a clearer understanding of this relationship.
