The Falling Sky and the Luminous Canopy: Yanomami Cosmopolitics, Shamanic Ecology, and the Defense of the Forest in the Anthropocene

This research monograph presents an exhaustive anthropological, epistemological, and macro-ecological investigation into Yanomami shamanism, centering on the philosophical testimony of Davi Kopenawa and Bruce Albert in The Falling Sky (2013), Eduardo Viveiros de Castro's Amerindian perspectivism, Isabelle Stengers' cosmopolitical ecology, and contemporary Earth-system climatology. We interrogate the Yanomami concept of the living forest (urihi a) not as an allegorical or cultural construct, but as an advanced operative sensorium and macro-biophysical cybernetic regulator. The monograph investigates three primary conceptual and systemic axes: The Shamanic Sensorium and Xapiri Ontology: The psychoactive entheogenic mechanics of yãkoana snuff (Virola elongata / 5-MeO-DMT), the dissolution of the mortal bodily husk (sikipë), and the opening of visionary perception (wakanë). We analyze the xapiri as the luminous ancestral image-beings (utupë) of primordial Yarori entities, establishing a non-representational semiotic matrix (Eduardo Kohn's 'how forests think') where the canopy articulates its own subjectivity through shamanic polyphony, sharply contrasted with Western reification via phonetic writing ('skins of paper' / péi thëã). The Necropolitics of the Merchandise People: Davi Kopenawa's diagnosis of capitalist commodity fetishism (matihipë thohori), the extractivist breach of subterranean strata (Në rope), and the liberation of lethal epidemic vapors (xawara). We examine illegal wildcat gold mining (garimpo), alluvial mercury amalgamation and toxic aquatic bioaccumulation (Fiocruz epidemiological data), malaria vector proliferation, and the 1993 Haximu Massacre under the lens of Achille Mbembe's necropolitics. The Climatological Shaman: The biogeophysical coupling between shamanic vocalization and atmospheric moisture transport. Synthesizing the Biotic Pump Theory (Victor Gorshkov and Anastassia Makarieva) and Amazonian 'flying rivers' (Antonio Donato Nobre, Jose Marengo), we show how canopy evapotranspiration (20 billion tons of H2O/day) drives continental precipitation and global thermal equilibrium. We demonstrate that Kopenawa's prophecy that 'the sky will fall' upon the extermination of the shamans is an empirically verifiable diagnostic of the Amazon Tipping Point (Thomas Lovejoy and Carlos Nobre's 20–25% deforestation threshold), marking an irreversible transition to scrub savanna with catastrophic global teleconnections. Finally, we formulate a model of cosmopolitical jurisprudence that integrates the demarcation of indigenous territories (Hutukara / TI Yanomami), autonomous protocols of consultation, the hybrid 'Territorial Immune System' (fusing shamanic spiritual patrolling with satellite drone monitoring), Rights of Nature constitutionalism, and global legal accountability for illicit supply chains of blood gold.
