Relationship between Psychosocial Factors and Job Performance among Public Servants in Kajiado County, Kenya

Background: This study examined the relationship between psychosocial factors (self-esteem and work-family conflict) and job performance among public servants in Kajiado County, Kenya. Job performance is important in every institution and is particularly significant in public service because it reflects the government's ability to serve citizens (Macharia, 2022). The work environment, including institutional and personal factors, can influence employee performance. Materials and Methods: A correlational research design was used. A sample of 200 public servants was selected purposively from a population of approximately 2,500, with the sample size determined using Yamane’s formula (1967). Data were collected using a standardised questionnaire and analysed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficient. Results: A total of 62.5% of public servants had a high level of job performance, 56.0% had moderate self-esteem, and 74.5% reported low work-family conflict. Self-esteem was positively associated with job performance, r (198) = .250, p < .05. Conclusion: The study recommends regular employee capacity building and access to psychosocial support to help strengthen self-esteem and job performance.
