Mobile-First & Responsive Cartographic De-sign in a Moment of Emergent Artificial Intelli-gence: Update on an ICA Research Agenda
Abstract. Here, we present and update a research agenda on mobile-first and responsive cartographic design published in the Journal of Location Based Services in 2024. We first introduce our collective process within the ICA (International Cartographic Association) to develop a set of three research agendas articles on mobile cartography that span user issues, technology issues, and design issues related to mobile maps and visualizations. We then describe a partial design space and 20 related research challenges from our assigned perspective of mobile map and visualization design. We then employ the 2024 research agenda as an analytical framework to review recent literature and reflect on emerging challenges and opportunities for research and development on mobile cartography given the fast-paced innovations in GeoAI (Geospatial Artificial Intelligence) since 2024. We conclude with priority considerations for integrating mobile cartography and GeoAI.
