Conflict resolution education and peace-building: a study at Mogadishu higher education institutions

This study examined how important conflict resolution education is for promoting peace building. Using a quantitative research methodology, the survey was carried out among academic staff from particular higher education institutions in Mogadishu, Somalia. Structured questionnaires were used to gather the data, which were then examined using the proper statistical methods. The results showed that peace education, student awareness, and peace-building were significantly positively correlated. In addition to promoting positive behaviors that support social harmony and nonviolent methods of resolving conflicts, peace education has been shown to improve students’ understanding of peaceful coexistence, tolerance, reconciliation, communication, and conflict resolution. Correlation analysis revealed strong positive correlations among all of the study variables. Students’ awareness ( r = 0.807, p < 0.01) and peace building ( r = 0.675, p < 0.01) were significantly correlated with peace education. There was a significant positive correlation between student awareness and peace building ( r = 0.727, p < 0.01). These findings indicate that increased student awareness and peace education are associated with better peace-building outcomes. In the Somali context, where social cohesion has been hampered by protracted conflict, political instability, and clan-based tensions, peace education becomes an essential tool for addressing the underlying causes of conflict and promoting long-term peace. To further peace-building efforts in Somalia, the results point to the necessity of incorporating peace education into curricula, encouraging interactive learning strategies, and bolstering cooperation between government institutions, educational stakeholders, civil society organizations, religious leaders, and international partners.
