Illness coping experiences among patients receiving peritoneal dialysis: a descriptive phenomenological study

Aims To explore the illness coping experiences of Chinese patients receiving peritoneal dialysis and to provide directions for interventions that promote the integration of treatment into daily life and improve quality of life. Design A descriptive phenomenological study. Methods We conducted semi-structured interviews with 14 patients receiving peritoneal dialysis between 1 August and 30 December 2025. Participants were recruited using maximum variation purposive sampling from the nephrology department of a tertiary hospital in Guangdong Province. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s seven-step phenomenological method. Results Three core themes were identified: illness experiences (concealment of illness, distress from physical manifestations, and complex psychological reactions), illness challenges (rigidification of daily routines, restricted mobility, dietary limitations, and need for a clean environment), and coping strategies (support from family and friends, healthcare professional support, and self-transcendence). Conclusion Coping with peritoneal dialysis is multidimensional, involving concealment of illness, physical distress, psychological reactions, daily-routine challenges, and coexisting coping resources. Clinical nursing needs to move from symptom management toward holistic care, strengthen family and professional support, and support patients in maintaining meaning and social connection.
