Strategic Regulatory Planning and Project Management for a High-Risk Medical Device: A Single-Chamber Leadless Pacemaker
This article examines the regulatory strategy and project-management considerations involved in bringing a representative single-chamber leadless pacemaker to market. A device of this kind has received FDA Premarket Approval and a corresponding Health Canada Class IV medical device licence, supported by a nonclinical and clinical evidence package addressing device function, mechanical performance, biological safety, and sterilization, together with applicable quality, risk-management, biocompatibility, and usability standards. This article reconstructs the device's regulatory journey using publicly available information and general regulatory frameworks, develops a standards-compliance matrix approach for organizing the applicable international standards, and closes with recommendations for regulatory affairs professionals managing comparable single-chamber implantable cardiac device programs. Keywords: single-chamber leadless pacemaker; Class III/IV medical device; Premarket Approval; Health Canada; quality management; human factors; regulatory artificial intelligence
