Balancing Cognitive Load and Bilingual Instruction in Competitive STEM Education: A Practice Reflection on IIT-JEE and NEET Mentorship in Kolkata

Preparing for high-stakes Indian entrance exams like the IIT-JEE and NEET puts a massive cognitive and emotional weight on teenagers. Based on 11 years of hands-on teaching experience with small batches of physics and mathematics students in Kolkata, this practice reflection looks at why localized, mentor-driven teaching works better than the factory model of coaching. By shifting from rigid English-only lectures to a bilingual approach (mixing Bengali and English), teachers can significantly lower the unnecessary mental strain on students. Additionally, adjusting the pace of learning based on real-time feedback and shielding students from unrealistic parental expectations helps prevent burnout. The observations suggest that when students learn complex physics concepts in their native language first, they build stronger analytical skills and handle exam pressure much better. This paper argues for a more empathetic, student-focused approach in India's highly competitive education system.
