Lookahead Attention Routing Intervention Optimization: Predicting Downstream Generation Effects to Select Adaptive Attention-Flow Configurations

Diffusion models generate images through iterative denoising processes in which attention mechanisms mediate information exchange across spatial positions, visual features, conditioning tokens, and network representations. Conventional inference typically follows the attention architecture and routing configuration established during model design or training. Although attention modification, attention control, token pruning, and computationally adaptive attention have been investigated in prior research, an attention configuration that appears unimportant at a particular denoising step may still influence the formation of fine details, semantic consistency, or relationships between objects in subsequent steps. This paper proposes Lookahead Attention Routing Intervention Optimization (LARIO), a conceptual framework for selecting attention-routing interventions according to their predicted downstream effects on final image generation. At each selected denoising step, LARIO constructs a small set of valid candidate routing configurations, estimates their future generation utility, and chooses an intervention that balances predicted quality, uncertainty, and computational cost. Candidate interventions may modify selected attention-head connections, redistribute computation between local and global attention, restrict particular attention edges, or selectively enable and disable routing patterns while preserving the underlying model's dimensional and computational requirements. The framework distinguishes direct attention statistics from downstream intervention effects and incorporates counterfactual evaluation, uncertainty-aware selection, receding-horizon control, and optional evaluator learning. A mathematical formulation, candidate-generation strategy, inference algorithm, training objectives, and experimental protocol are presented. The initial experiment is designed to hold the pretrained model, prompt, sampler, and random seed constant while changing only a small number of attention-routing configurations at designated layers and denoising steps. Evaluation includes final image quality, prompt alignment, object relationships, attention-routing prediction accuracy, and additional inference overhead. No experimental results are claimed. The proposed framework is a testable research hypothesis whose novelty and effectiveness must be established through comparison with attention-control, pruning, fixed-routing, and adaptive-computation baselines.
