Impact of Political Leadership on Education in Rivers State Between 2007 and 2023

The study investigated the impact of political leadership on education in Rivers State between 2007 and 2023. Despite the huge financial allocation accruing to River State both from federal allocation and internally generated revenue, the education sector in Rivers State has not received the necessary attention. Many schools built in Rivers State especially in rural areas, lack basic infrastructure such as proper classrooms, desks, chairs, and toilets. Most of the schools built under the administration of Rotimi Amaechi between 2007 and 2015 across many communities in the State were poorly managed during the administration of Nyesom Wike (2015 and 2023). Primary and secondary sources of data were applied for the study. The study adopted the Human Capital Theory propounded by Becker 1962. The study found that the education sector in Rivers State received considerable attention between 2007 and 2015, while between 2015. These gains were eroded from 2015 and 2023. The Study concluded that between 2007 and 2015, political leadership in Rivers State had a tangible positive impact on the education sector. This was characterized by provision of infrastructure as there were visible efforts in constructing and rehabilitating school buildings and other educational facilities. This created a more conducive learning environment for students. In stark contrast, the period from 2015-2023 witnessed a decline in the education sector. The progress achieved between 2007-2015 in the education sector in the State was thus eroded between 2015-2023. The study recommended among others that Rivers State government should develop a long-term Education Master Plan (e.g., 10-15 years) that transcends political cycles. This plan should be championed by a diverse committee of educational experts, community leaders, and relevant stakeholders, not just political appointees. This approach would institutionalize educational goals, funding mechanisms, and performance metrics, making them less susceptible to the whims of successive administrations.
