When the Pieces Fit: The Discovery of Integer Factors through Reversible Transformations
Match Factoring looks for a common value in two square-difference ladders associated with an odd integer. This paper explores a reversible transformation in which one prescribed succession of area pieces generates its companion through progressive borrowing and carrying. Rather than searching two lists of products, the reader follows coordinated changes within one construction until the pieces fit without a remainder. The descending and ascending procedures are developed separately through stepped numerical charts and geometric illustrations. Examples 15, 21, and 25 show how the transformation progresses; 45 reaches two distinct closures in each direction. The example 13 shows why completing the required succession is insufficient if extra material remains. Exact closure requires that a complete initial group of source pieces become a complete initial group of the prescribed target pieces, with no unfinished carry. A simple difference-of-squares argument explains how the counts of completed pieces reveal integer factors, why prime odd integers have no positive closure, and how nontrivial odd factor pairs correspond to positive closures. The emphasis is on understanding the rearrangement and its mathematical relationships, rather than developing a competitive factoring algorithm. The record includes a standalone interactive reader engine with ascending and descending options, individual operations, automatic playback, and pauses at exact closures. The paper develops ideas from WidiVision, especially Perspectives 4 and 5, and complements Crossed Rectangles and Beyond Equality.
