Del yo al nosotras: afroespañolidad, posmigración y subjetividades híbridas en el teatro de Silvia Albert Sopale

This article examines the theater of Silvia Albert Sopale as a key voice within contemporary Afro-Spanish performance and as a critical vantage point on current Spanish society. Drawing on a theoretical framework that combines the postmigrant paradigm with the figuration of the nomadic subject, it analyzes how her work articulates hybrid subjectivities situated at the intersection of migrant genealogies, colonial memories, and European belongings. The study focuses on three key pieces— No es país para negras (2016), La Moreneta (2017), and Blackface y otras vergüenzas (2019)—that make it possible to trace an aesthetic shift from autofiction toward ritualized forms. In No es país para negras , the performer’s lived experience becomes a site where microracisms, double consciousness, and negotiations of belonging are inscribed against the backdrop of a society that persists in imagining itself as white. La Moreneta and Blackface y otras vergüenzas widen the lens toward institutional frameworks and symbolic representational spaces that (re)produce racialized otherness, while asserting the cultural and affective legacy of Black and Afro-descendant communities as a constitutive part of Spain’s sociocultural fabric. From an intersectional perspective, the article argues that Albert Sopale’s dramaturgy destabilizes the “us/them” dichotomy and compels a rethinking of critical tools, insofar as her plays offer a situated reflection on race, belonging, and citizenship. In doing so, they shift the discussion of racism toward a dispute over who has the right to say “we” in contemporary Spain, and under what precise conditions this collective pronoun can designate a truly inclusive and plural community.
