Turkish Drama as a Tool of Soft Power in Spreading Turkish Culture and Language in the Digital Age

This study examines the role of Turkish television dramas in promoting the Turkish language and culture, particularly in Arab societies. It explores the cultural dimensions of Turkish dramas and their role in encouraging language learning through dramatic works. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach, drawing on available secondary sources and the researcher’s expertise to examine the phenomenon. The analysis indicates that Turkish dramas contribute to the international spread of the Turkish language through several interconnected factors. Repeated exposure to Turkish dialogue, accompanied by subtitles, familiarizes viewers with Turkish words and expressions and may facilitate vocabulary acquisition over time. The appeal of Turkish dramas may also encourage viewers to learn the language. Other contributing factors include compelling storylines, high production quality, engaging screenplays, and dramatic conflicts that sustain audience interest. Furthermore, cultural and religious affinities between Turkey and the Arab world may enhance the reception of Turkish dramas among Arab audiences. Overall, Turkish dramas represent a medium of cultural influence and informal language exposure, illustrating their potential as a tool of soft power in the digital age.
