A Critical Role: The Perspectives of Committed Partners on the Relationship Impact of Playing Tabletop Roleplaying Games Together

This exploratory qualitative study explored the perspectives of couples in committed partnerships on how playing tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs) together has impacted their relationships. Semi-structured interviews informed by Knapp’s relationship model were used to collect data from seven couples who began playing TTRPGs together after entering into committed partnerships. Through theoretical analysis, the data revealed three major themes: 1) Relationship Development; 2) Personal Growth; and 3) Overcoming Challenges. Theme 1 was further broken down into the subthemes of Intentional Time, Shared Interests, and Recognizing Partner Strengths, while Theme 2 was broken down into the subthemes of Relationship Skills, Increased Empathy, and Identity Development. No subthemes were identified for Theme 3.
