A Critical Analysis of Systemic Challenges in Nigerian Education: A Review

This paper examines the prospects and challenges facing Nigeria’s education sector, framing education as the essential foundation for meaningful and sustainable national development. It identifies that the sector’s potential is severely undermined by a confluence of systemic issues, including chronic underfunding, poor governance, decaying infrastructure, a critical shortage of qualified teachers, institutional corruption, and worsening insecurity. These challenges collectively degrade the quality, accessibility, and equity of education, thereby limiting its role as a tool for socio-economic and technological progress. The analysis argues that achieving significant improvement requires a concerted repositioning by all stakeholders, government, private sector, parents, and communities. Key recommendations prioritize a substantial increase in and efficient management of education funding, massive investment in infrastructure and educational technology, and the merit-based appointment of competent administrators. Furthermore, the paper stresses the need for robust data systems for planning, enhanced institutional autonomy, and the faithful implementation of existing policies to ensure quality and affordable education for all. The conclusion underscores that while the challenges are profound, actionable pathways exist to revitalize this critical sector for national development.
