From penalty to reward: updated graphical representations of CATA and liking-score analyses using freely available R scripts

This article proposes to present the results of the previously developed “penalty” analysis as “rewards”, in recognition of the fact that reward metrics are more intuitive to interpret than penalty metrics, which can be counterintuitive. It also introduces the latest developments and improvements to freely available R scripts, allowing these representations and associated statistical approaches. The ANOVA analysis of liking scores has been updated to a mixed-effects model, treating product as a fixed effect and panelist as a random effect. All scripts have also been updated with a color palette suited to color-blind readers. This article presents these analyses with a pedagogical focus, aiming to clarify the advantages of each method and graphical representation for the broader sensory science community.
