The Importance of Military Science in the Liberian Educational System; A Recommendation for the Integration of Military Science Into Liberia's Educational Curriculum

To accelerate national development and foster civic responsibility, this paper proposes integrating military science as a formal academic discipline within Liberia's secondary and tertiary education sectors. Moving beyond conventional misconceptions of school militarization, the proposed framework re-imagines military science as a civil-centric curriculum anchored in ethical leadership, emergency preparedness, and constitutional governance. A successful roll out depends on three critical pillars. First, a thorough inter ministerial legal review must validate historical precedents, specifically assessing the current applicability of Executive Order No. 12:54 (May 1954). Second, the curriculum must intentionally bridge historical gaps in Liberian education by blending national defense concepts with peace building, human rights, and civilian control of the military. Finally, a transparent stakeholder engagement framework is vital to preserve the civilian identity of participating institutions and secure public trust. Ultimately, the manuscript urges the Ministries of Education, National Defense, and Justice to commission a joint technical committee. This body will be tasked with designing a competency-based curriculum and launching a closely monitored, multi-indicator pilot program in select schools, positioning military science as a vital mechanism for shaping disciplined, service-oriented citizens.
