GENOTYPE-SYMPTOM ASSOCIATIONS AND DIAGNOSTIC INTERPRETATION IN DIENTAMOEBA FRAGILIS

Dear Editor,Ayrangöl et al. provides valuable comparative data on culture and molecular methods for detecting of Dientamoeba fragilis and contributes to the ongoing discussion regarding its clinical significance (1). A few points may help place the findings in context. All 18 genotyped PCR-positive samples were identified as Genotype 1, with no Genotype 2 isolates detected. This homogeneous genotype distribution is itself an informative finding and is consistent with the predominance of Genotype 1 reported in human populations. However, because no between-genotype variation was present, the relationship between genotype and clinical manifestations could not be fully explored in this cohort. The absence of a detected genotype-symptom association may therefore warrant cautious interpretation.
