Transforming Professional Development Through Technology: A Review Article of the Literature

Abstract Educators develop professionally via constant engagement with novel learning experiences and putting into practice the novel knowledge gained as a result of the experiences. Educational and professional landscapes are significantly influenced by digital technologies' rapid advancement, prompting a re‐evaluation of traditional Professional Development (PD) practices. The digital technologies' rapid integration into education has significantly reshaped how PD for teachers is designed, delivered, and experienced. Traditional one‐size‐fits‐all workshops are rapidly being displaced by more adaptive, individualized, and technology‐supported models that better address educators' changing needs in today's learning environment. This review aims to explore current literature on the integration of technology in PD, thereby exploring how digital tools and platforms transform PD experiences across various professional settings. A comprehensive literature review is conducted, concentrating on peer‐reviewed articles, systematic reviews, and case studies published between 2015 and 2025. Databases like ERIC, Scopus, and Google Scholar are utilized. Keywords include “technology‐enhanced PD”, “digital learning”, “online PD”, and “virtual training”. The review identifies five key themes: flexibility and accessibility of online PD; increased learner engagement through multimedia tools; personalization and adaptive learning; challenges related to digital literacy; and the role of institutional support. Technology can transform PD by making learning more accessible, interactive, and personalized to individual needs. However, the effectiveness of tech‐based PD depends on thoughtful design, ongoing support, and alignment with professional goals.
