Rethinking the Lanthanide Contraction: A Three-Factor Model for the Similar Atomic Radii of Zr and Hf and an Inquiry-Based Teaching Module

Abstract This study addresses a concept that is both fundamental and frequently oversimplified in inorganic chemistry teaching: the explanation of the similar atomic radii of Zr and Hf by the lanthanide contraction. Because textbooks and conventional lectures present this explanation as a single memorized conclusion, students who can recite the phrase “lanthanide contraction” are usually unable to explain how the contraction actually produces the radius match. To remedy this, we propose a three-factor synergistic model for teaching: (i) the lanthanide contraction as the primary size reduction; (ii) the symmetry-dependent shielding of the 4f orbitals as a fine-tuning factor; and (iii) the nuclear-charge-driven, relativity-enhanced contraction of the 5p orbital in heavy main-group elements as a foundational spatial-scale factor. The model is supported by quantum-chemical calculations (ORCA/Multiwfn) that are intended primarily for the instructor’s own preparation. On this basis, we designed an extended 24 min inquiry-based teaching module and compared it with a conventional 12 min lecture in three classes of chemistry majors. In-class quizzes show that the two modes achieve comparable performance on basic conceptual recall, whereas the inquiry-based module was associated with improved performance on mechanistic discrimination, multifactor attribution, and knowledge transfer. As an exploratory classroom evaluation with acknowledged design limitations, these results should be read as indicative rather than as a controlled demonstration of superiority over the traditional lecture.
