Polskie Lekarskie Towarzystwo Wydawnicze. Organizacja, program i znaczenie dla ruchu wydawniczego lekarzy w II Rzeczypospolitej

This article examines the Polskie Lekarskie Towarzystwo Wydawnicze (PLTW), one of the first publishing companies established by the medical community in the Second Polish Republic. It aims to reconstruct the company’s origins, organisational structure, membership, and publishing programme, and to determine its place within physicians’ publishing activities in interwar Poland. The study draws on archival records and press materials, including the PLTW periodicals “Lekarz Polski”, “Czasopismo Sądowo-Lekarskie”, and “Orędownik Zdrowia”, as well as library catalogues and Stanisław Ciechanowski’s correspondence held at the Jagiellonian Library. Archival and library research established the company’s membership, successive office locations, and principal areas of activity. The findings show that the PLTW’s publishing programme centred on medical periodicals with diverse profiles, informational and practical publications, offprints of articles from the medical press, and bibliographic compilations. The study reconstructs the history and scope of activity of this little-known publishing company and opens up new avenues for research into the medical press of the interwar period.
