Growth, Instability, Decomposition and Trend Analysis of Tomato Area, Production and Yield in India

Assessing changes in tomato area, production and yield can clarify the sources and stability of India's long-term output growth. This study investigates the evolution of tomato cultivation in India using 30 annual observations (1995-96 to 2024-25) assembled from annual national horticultural statistics. Cultivated area, production and yield were analysed through log-linear compound annual growth rates, coefficients of variation, the Cuddy-Della Valle instability index, exact endpoint decomposition and six alternative time-trend functions. Yield was consistently recomputed as production divided by area to maintain consistency with the production identity. The national series rose from 355.7 to 809.9 thousand hectares in area and from 5.44 to 20.60 million tonnes in production. Across the full period, estimated annual growth was 3.10% for area, 5.28% for production and 2.12% for yield. Growth slowed in 2015-16 to 2024-25, when production increased at 0.90% annually and yield changed by -0.03%. Production showed greater detrended instability (12.12%) than area (11.86%) or yield (5.91%). Endpoint decomposition attributed 45.84% of the total production increase to area expansion, 23.79% to yield improvements and 30.37% to their interaction. Nonlinear trends offered improved descriptive fit relative to simple linear specifications, but model choice requires attention to complexity and predictive performance. The evidence supports a shift towards yield resilience, climate adaptation and more efficient production systems, without establishing causal effects of particular interventions.
