PERBANDINGAN KONDUKTIVITAS TERMAL MATERIAL LOGAM MENGGUNAKAN METODE SEDERHANA BERBASIS WAKTU LELEH

ABSTRACT Thermal response of metallic conductors is important in heat exchangers, solar-thermal systems, and power-electronic cooling. This study comparatively evaluates transient heat conduction in iron and copper bars using a simple paraffin melting-time method based on the Ingen-Housz principle, with emphasis on quantitative interpretation and uncertainty limits. Two cylindrical bars of identical dimensions (30 cm long and 0.5 cm in diameter) were stabilized at room temperature and heated at one end with a standardized alcohol burner positioned 2.0 cm from the specimen. Paraffin indicators and surface temperature were observed at five positions from 5 to 25 cm using a calibrated K-type thermocouple. Copper reached the melting criterion earlier at every observation point. At 25 cm, paraffin melted after 875 s on copper and 3,825 s on iron, corresponding to a 77.12% shorter response time for copper and an iron-to-copper response-time ratio of 4.37. Across all positions, the ratio ranged from 2.00 to 5.22, with a mean of 4.19 ± 1.28. Average surface temperatures at melting were 41.18°C for iron and 39.88°C for copper, deviating by 25.13% and 27.49% from the nominal 55°C reference. The variations reflect transient heat accumulation, thermal diffusivity, radial heat losses, sensor placement, thermal contact resistance, and the melting range of commercial paraffin. Because heat input and losses were not fully quantified and independent replications were unavailable, the method is appropriate as a low-cost comparative instructional screening method rather than an absolute measurement of thermal conductivity.
