Lookahead Tone Correction: Predicting Whether Candidate Tone Adjustments Will Better Satisfy the Communication Objective

Tone correction is an important component of text generation, editing, and human–computer communication. Conventional tone adjustment methods often transform text according to a requested style, such as politeness, formality, friendliness, confidence, or assertiveness. However, a locally appropriate tone does not necessarily produce the best communication outcome. An adjustment that increases politeness may weaken a necessary request, while an adjustment that increases assertiveness may introduce unnecessary interpersonal tension. Furthermore, the effects of tone can depend on the audience, communication channel, preceding context, intended action, and subsequent discourse. This paper proposes Lookahead Tone Correction (LTC), a conceptual framework that evaluates candidate tone adjustments according to their predicted effects on the overall communication objective. Rather than directly applying a tone transformation, LTC generates alternative revisions, estimates their downstream communicative utility, and selects a revision that balances objective alignment, semantic preservation, interpersonal appropriateness, clarity, and editing cost. The framework formalizes tone correction as a constrained decision problem and introduces candidate revision generation, context-conditioned outcome prediction, uncertainty-aware selection, and optional feedback-based policy learning. A mathematical formulation, training objectives, inference algorithm, and experimental protocol are presented. The framework is designed to be compatible with existing language models and text-editing systems. No experimental results are claimed. Its effectiveness and novelty must be established through controlled comparisons with instruction-based rewriting, direct tone classification, preference-based optimization, and other relevant methods.
